The Wellston Coal Festival

The 45th Annual Wellston Coal Festival will feature their signature parades through the streets of downtown Wellston on Wednesday, September 5th and Saturday, September 8th. The parades will begin at 6:30 pm with lineup beginning at 5:00 pm.

Dessert Contest

Does your family think your desserts are to die for? Do your friends always ask for your recipes? Then you are the cook we are looking for.

The Annual Wellston Coal Festival Dessert Contest will be held on Saturday, September 8th at the Sts Peter and Paul Parish Hall in Wellston. Bring your desserts by 9:00 am to be judged. To qualify for judging, all dessert entries must be accompanied by a recipe and $5 entry fee. Desserts will be judged on originality, texture, appearance and taste. This year we will have 2 categories, Homemade and Semi-Homemade. Results of the judging will be announced from the main stage after the Saturday night parade.

Winners will receive cash awards of $75 for 1st place, $50 for 2nd place, and $25 for 3rd place. The top in each category will also receive a Coal Festival apron. Winning recipes will also be featured in The Telegram. All desserts in the contest will be served at the Queen's Luncheon. *Past winning recipes are not eligible.

Senior Bingo sponsored by Heartland of Jackson will be held on Wednesday, September 5th at 2:00 pm. Bingo will be played along with other games. Refreshments will be served and door prizes will also be given away. The activities are open to anyone 50 years and older.

Art Show

The Wellston Coal Festival Art Show will be held at the Wellston Depot September 6th - 8th with registrations and check ins on Friday 8/31 from 4p-6p and Saturday 9/1 from noon - 2p. For more information, contact Dana Lockard@ 740-418-6610

Coal Miner Olympics

The Wellston Coal Festival will once again open the festival schedule with the annual Coal Miner Olympics. The "Olympics" take place in front of the Rotary Stage at 6:00 pm on Tuesday, September 4th. Teams consist of people from the same business, church, organization or family. The winning team will win $100 and will have the opportunity to donate their winnings to the charity of their choice.

The event is free of charge. Anyone that would like to enter a team in the Coal Miner Olympics should contact Jennifer Childers at (740) 977-8322 or just show up and register.

Car & Cycle Show

The Black Diamond Masonic Lodge of Wellston will host the Annual Wellston Coal Festival, Dan Lockard Memorial Car and Motorcycle Show on Saturday, September 8th. Registration starts at 9am, show gets underway at Noon and awards are at 3pm. Entry fee is $10. Trophies will be given to top 3 for each of 4 classes: 1900-60’, 61’-72’, 73’ - 81’ and 82’ thru present. There will also be the Hector’s choice, Best Bike and a special RatRod Award given. Mini Queen Contest

The Wellston Coal Festival will hold its annual Mini Queen Contest on Tuesday, September 4th at 7:30 pm on the Rotary Bandstand.

The winning girl will receive sash and crown. Two co-attendants will be chosen, each also receiving sash and crown.

The reigning Coal Festival Mini’s will be expected to appear at the Wednesday night Hometown Parade as well as the Saturday night Grand Finale Parade. Mini’s may be eligible for other events with approval.

To be eligible to compete, you must be no younger than 3 years old and no older than 5 years old.

Baby Contest

The Wellston Coal Festival will hold its annual Baby Contest on Saturday, September 8th at 10:00 am on the Rotary Grandstand. The contest is open to any child between the ages of 3 months and 24 months old

There are 8 divisions total with boy and girls being split into 4 groups each:

- 3 months to 6 months

- 7 months to 12 months

- 13 months to 18 months

- 19 months to 24 months

Awards will be given for 1st through 3rd place in each of the divisions.

This year's theme is “Ohio Hill Country!”. All Babies will be judged on theme, dressing and personality. NO PROPS. A prop will be considered anything the child cannot carry by themselves without any help.
